Upper Bergamo with its ancient gates and the scent of history
Walking through the streets of Upper Bergamo (Bergamo Alta), we noticed one of the beautiful details of this wonderful town: the ancient doors and gates. In our opinion, they are very fascinating and have the power to send you back in time, making you imagine what life was like hundreds of years ago.
They are very varied and scattered throughout the borough, some of them well preserved over time, others a little less so, but all with the same charm.
Apart from this detail, Bergamo Alta offers so much more, such as the walk to reach it, which opens up at the sight of the walls and the entrance gate (Porta San Giacomo), or the funicular railway which takes us in a few minutes to Piazza Mercato delle scarpe, where the market used to be held and which is now the starting point for a visit to the village.
The village is pure history. The Piazza Vecchia, the beating heart of the village, is wonderful, with its library (one of the oldest in Italy) and 52-metre tower.
In Piazza Duomo we find one beauty after another: the Duomo, with its elegant white façade, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, with its Romanesque façade, the Colleoni Chapel, with its Renaissance façade in polychrome marble, and the Baptistery.
All this, however, we will show you in detail in the Tour of Lombardy in preparation, which also includes Bergamo’s Upper Town.
Hoping to have conveyed a little curiosity about this wonderful place, we look forward to seeing you in the next “Nice to meet you” article.
