Way of Celestine
The Celestine Way in 5 days. A 5-stage walk through the hermitages of the Majella National Park.
5-day walk in the Majella National Park
Day by day
Morning meeting with the Majambiente guide near the Badia Morronese in Sulmona. Greetings, presentation of participants and introduction to the territory. Handing over of the Charta Peregrini and departure for the first stage.
Guided visit to the Abbey of Santo Spirito in Sulmona, better known as Badia Morronese, or to the Hermitage of Sant’Onofrio al Morrone, a hermitage closely linked to the figure of Pietro Da Morrone and his election as Pope, nestled like an eagle’s nest among the rocks of Morrone.
The visit to Sant’Onofrio is still uncertain for now. We are waiting for the renovation work to be completed. In the event that it is not possible to visit the Hermitage, we will visit La Badia Morronese.
In the morning, breakfast in Pacentro and meeting with the guide.
Excursion stage that will circumvent Mount Morrone and pass from the Conca Peligna to the Orta Valley until reaching the small village of Roccacaramanico.
From here we will descend to Caramanico Terme, another one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, embraced by the Orta and Orfento rivers just below the Maiella and Morrone mountains.
Breakfast at Caramanico Terme, meeting with the Majambiente guide and departure for the third stage.
This stage crosses the Orfento Valley, one of the most spectacular on the Majella. Here you will be immersed in a deep gorge with vertical walls and dense beech woods. Along the route you will visit the Hermitage of Sant’Onofrio.
Breakfast in Decontra, meeting with the Majambiente guide and departure for the fourth stage.
This will be the stage that will take us to visit two of the most important hermitages among those linked to Celestine V: Santo
Spirito a Maiella and San Bartolomeo in Legio. After walking for a stretch on a mule track, the path will gradually climb into the forest until it reaches a stream. From here we will climb up to the Hermitage/Abbey of Santo Spirito and spend an hour or so visiting the complex. Afterwards, a shuttle bus will take you to Macchie di Coco and another short hike to San Bartolomeo in Legio. Finally, we will meet again directly at the B&B for the evening stop.
