After breakfast, we vacate our rooms and set off for one of the places of worship dearest to the people of Campania, the Sanctuary of Montevergine.

Founded in 1118 by Saint William of Vercelli, the Sanctuary has been remodelled several times over time and today has an imposing and rigorous appearance.
Around the middle of the 12th century, Charles II of Anjou had a votive chapel built to fulfil a vow he had made while he was a prisoner of the Aragonese in Sicily, and asked Montano d’Arezzo to decorate it. The icon of the Majesty of Montevergine, painted between 1296 and 1297 and named after Mamma Schiavona, is linked to this artist.
The abbey museum, which was set up during the last Jubilee, occupies the rooms of the monastery and includes four thematic areas: the picture gallery houses paintings from the 16th to the 18th century and marbles of various origins; the collection of sacred vestments and liturgical objects; the exhibition of Nativity scenes includes Neapolitan cribs and others from all over the world. A separate room houses the stone known as the ‘imprint of the Madonna’, linked to the traditions of pilgrimages to Montevergine.
In the abbey complex there is also a herbalist’s shop with a vast assortment of products: herbs, herbal teas, liqueurs, wines, honey, beers, chocolates, sweets, produced by the Benedictine fathers of Montevergine and other monasteries using ancient recipes.
