Florence and Siena – Between Faith and Renaissance
4 days / 3 nights
Arrival at the hotel in the centre and accommodation in the rooms. After meeting with the guide we will start our tour with a pleasant walk in the historical centre to get to know Florence, its history, the families that made it famous, the most famous monuments, the anecdotes, the most suggestive views, the most hidden corners.
We will see together: the Duomo complex, Piazza della Repubblica, the medieval quarter where Dante Alighieri was born, Piazza della Signoria with its statues and Palazzo Vecchio, Ponte Vecchio with its jewellers overlooking the Arno.
Return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast meet your guide and visit the four most important basilicas of Florence.
The Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, founded by the Dominican friars in the 13th century, has one of the most beautiful facades of the Renaissance. Inside the sober Gothic basilica we can admire Giotto’s moving Crucifix and Masaccio’s “Trinity”.
The Basilica di Santa Trinita, founded in the 11th century, bears witness to the many changes that have taken place over the centuries. Inside the church, among fascinating sculptures and altarpieces, we will discover the marvellous frescoes of the Sassetti Chapel entirely decorated by Domenico Ghirlandaio, Michelangelo’s master.
Lunch in a restaurant.
Afterwards, we head to the Basilica of Santa Croce with its frescoes by Giotto, the precursor of the Renaissance and his school. Many other works by Donatello, Vasari, Bronzino have further embellished this beautiful medieval church. Santa Croce is also considered the mausoleum of illustrious Italians, as it is the burial place of such figures as Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei, Niccolò Machiavelli and Gioacchino Rossini. In the cloister is one of Brunelleschi’s Renaissance masterpieces, the Cappella dei Pazzi.
Return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast meeting with the guide and transfer by coach to Siena. We begin an itinerary between art and spirituality in the footsteps of Saint Catherine of Siena to get to know this splendid city.
We visit the historic centre with a local guide, visiting the places dear to Saint Catherine, patron saint of Italy and Europe.
We will enter the Basilica Cateriniana of San Domenico. Famous for guarding the head-relic of the Saint.
We continue towards the House-Sanctuary of Santa Caterina. A place of worship for many believers. It was enlarged by demolishing the Church of Sant’Antonio and building the Portico dei Comuni.
Not far from the Sanctuary, we will see Fontebranda. It is certainly the most imposing and rich in water source in Italy, but it is undoubtedly the most famous as it was mentioned by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy.
Lunch in a restaurant.
After the lunch break, we will visit the Duomo of Siena. Italian Romanesque-Gothic cathedral inside which are preserved numerous masterpieces created over the centuries, including the magnificent floor.
Return to the hotel in Florence. Dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast we will finish our Tour with a guided visit to the Duomo Complex. Specifically we will enter the Baptistery, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, patron saint of the city of Florence. The Florentine Baptistery was the place of investiture of knights and poets, as Dante Alighieri recalls in Paradise.
We will then visit the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo. Among the most important works are works by Andrea Pisano, Arnolfo di Cambio, Nanni di Banco, the original reliefs of the Gates of Paradise by Ghiberti, Michelangelo’s Pietà Bandini and one of the world’s largest collections of works by Donatello, second only to the National Museum of the Bargello.
