The Sanctuary of Oropa is a Marian sanctuary, dedicated to the Black Madonna, located a few kilometres north of Biella, in the Oropa district, at 1,150 metres above sea level, in a natural amphitheatre of mountains.
The sanctuary includes, in addition to a Sacro Monte (the Sacred Mount of Oropa), the original church built on the basis of an ancient sacellum and the current sanctuary equipped with various facilities for hospitality.
In March 1957 Pope Pius XII elevated it to the dignity of a minor basilica. As part of the system of Sacred Mountains of Piedmont and Lombardy, the Sacro Monte of Oropa was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003.
A pilgrimage to Oropa is a unique spiritual experience.
