The Middle Ages in Umbria, a journey through time
Umbria is full of villages, castles and abbeys that have retained their typical medieval appearance. We will take you on a guided tour of some of the most beautiful towns and cities in Italy, such as Assisi, Gubbio, Spoleto and Cascia, taking you back to medieval times. Of course, there is also the spiritual aspect of the trip, with the patron saints of Italy, St Francis and St Rita of Cascia, as we visit the basilicas and churches dedicated to them, passing through the natural landscapes that have made Umbria (the green heart of Italy) famous.
The programme in brief:
Day 1
Arrival in Domus in Assisi and visit to some of the symbolic places of the town of St Francis.
2nd day
Visit to Cascia. We enter the Basilica dedicated to her and then visit the Monastery where Saint Rita lived and set an example for forty years.
Short coach trip to Roccaporena. We will begin our tour of the small village by visiting the suggestive Sacred Rock from below, where Rita climbed to pray and feel closer to God. We will then continue to the Orto del Miracolo (Garden of the Miracle), with its bronze sculpture of the seriously ill Saint with her cousin leaning over her.
We move by coach to Spoleto. Thanks to a network of escalators, we will start the visit of the city from the imposing Rocca that overlooks it; we will do the so-called “walk” of the people of Spoleto, meeting the suggestive Bridge of Towers, the symbol that most identifies Spoleto, then around the corner the magnificent view of the Piazza del Duomo, dedicated to the Assumption with an unforgettable facade; we will arrive in the Piazza del Mercato which houses two Roman arches.Day 3
Visit to Gubbio, the most beautiful medieval town in Italy.
We start our visit from the hill overlooking the city with the Basilica of St. Ubaldo (venerated patron saint of the city) and walk along the road of the candles, a sacred path for the Gubbio people, with magnificent views of rooftops, squares, bell towers, then we enter the village proper and end the day at the Roman theatre.
Day 4
Visit to the historic centre of Assisi. We enter the Hermitage of the Carceri.
We descend a few kilometres to visit the Sanctuary of San Damiano.
We finish with a visit to the Porziuncola, set in the immense Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
