Tuscany Tour – Timeless beauties
4 days / 3 nights
Arrival at the Hotel**** in Montecatini Terme and accommodation in the rooms. After meeting with the guide, we will set off for San Miniato, an ancient village of Lombard origin. During our walk, we will see the 12th century Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and San Genesio with its Matilda Tower and the Fortress of Frederick II.
Further on, we will see the Palazzo Comunale which houses the Oratorio del Loretino and the Sala delle Sette Virtù where decisions on the administration of the municipality were taken after the death of Frederick II. Finally, the Bishop’s Seminary, a special building with a frescoed façade.
On the way back, we will stop in Vinci, the birthplace of the most famous genius of all time, Leonardo da Vinci. We will visit his birthplace and the Museo Leonardiano where more than 60 reconstructions of his “machines” are preserved.
Return to the hotel in Montecatini, dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, we set off in the direction of Volterra. A beautiful Tuscan village that holds all the charm of the Renaissance. We will visit the Palazzo dei Priori, the civil symbol of Volterra, which was built to counteract the religious power of the city. In fact, the Palace was erected exactly opposite the Duomo and the Baptistery, with the baptismal font inside, made from an Etruscan marble tomb.
We leave Volterra for San Gimignano. The town has literally remained stationary in the Middle Ages due to its decline since the 14th century. Of the 72 towers, unfortunately only 13 remain today. We will visit the Cathedral with its twelfth-century Romanesque façade and some absolutely beautiful works of art inside, the Piazza del Popolo and walk through the characteristic alleys and narrow streets that make thousands of tourists from all over the world dream.
Lunch in a restaurant.
After lunch we move on to Monteriggioni. This tiny village is characterised by its walls and 14 towers. It feels like entering one of the castles we saw in cartoons when we were children. Monteriggioni is a true jewel of the military art of the Middle Ages. Legend has it that there are still tunnels and hidden roads leading to the nearby fortifications and even as far as Siena.
Return to the hotel in Montecatini, dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast departure by bus to Florence. We will visit the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, founded by the Dominican friars in the 13th century, which has one of the most beautiful facades of the Renaissance. Inside the sober Gothic basilica we can admire Giotto’s moving Crucifix and Masaccio’s “Trinity”.
Walking through the centre, we will see the Duomo complex, Piazza della Repubblica, the medieval quarter where Dante Alighieri was born, Piazza della Signoria with its statues, Palazzo Vecchio, Ponte Vecchio with its jewellery shops overlooking the Arno.
Lunch in a restaurant.
Finally we will enter the Basilica of Santa Croce with its frescoes by Giotto, the precursor of the Renaissance and his school. Many other works by Donatello, Vasari, Bronzino have further embellished this beautiful medieval church. Santa Croce is also considered the mausoleum of the illustrious Italians, as it is the burial place of such figures as Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei, Niccolò Machiavelli and Gioacchino Rossini. In the cloister is one of Brunelleschi’s Renaissance masterpieces, the Cappella dei Pazzi.
