At an altitude of 1,520 metres above sea level lies the most important pilgrimage site in South Tyrol: the pilgrimage church of Madonna di Pietralba. Here, in 1553, the Virgin Mary appeared to the hermit Leonhard Weissensteiner after he fell into a deep gorge. Leonhard built a chapel in honour of the Virgin Mary, which was soon enlarged to become today’s Baroque building. The imposing convent was added later. In 1885, the then Bishop of Trento, Giovanni Giacomo della Bona, re-consecrated the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows.
In the summer of 1988, this place became famous thanks to the visit of Pope John Paul II.
A unique place in South Tyrol to experience one’s spirituality to the full.
